SMU Fans Celebrate Upset Win Over Miami
Stolen: One set of goal posts. White. Apparently disassembled. One upright last seen in fountain at Dallas Hall. Another reported on Mockingbird in transport of what appeared to be a couple dozen frat boys. Anyone with information, please contact Rhett Lashlee at SMU or your local police.
Kids these days.
For years, SMU couldn’t get students to come in off the Boulevard for a game, then when they finally do for Saturday’s 26-20 upset of 10th-ranked Miami in overtime, they make off with the furniture.
After beating No. 10 Miami, SMU fans pose with one of the goalposts removed from Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

SMU’s Upset Win
The Mustangs, 4-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, suddenly find themselves back in the running for the league title after pulling off their first upset of a top-10 team since the ‘83 Cotton Bowl. They hadn’t won a game at home over a top-10 team since 1974, a 51-year period covering at least three home stadiums.

Consequently, you could see how people might get a little worked up Saturday afternoon on the Hilltop. And that was before Georgia Tech — previously one of only two teams undefeated in ACC play, along with Virginia — lost to North Carolina State.
SMU’s Celebration
SMU’s celebration will cost the school $50,000, payable to the ACC’s Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford Postgraduate Scholarship account, which could use an acronym, to say the least.
“I neither condone nor support it, for the record,” SMU president Jay Hartzell posted about the vandalism, “but I’ll pay the fine …”
He followed the post with a Pony Up and red and blue hearts, just to show he wasn’t really mad at the perpetrators.
The good news is, fans took down only the south goal posts, leaving the north for another day. The Mustangs will have a hard time topping Saturday’s results. But, if they beat 14th-ranked Louisville on Nov. 22, Hartzell might want to station a perimeter around his end zones.
Best in Texas News
By the way: After a monthlong absence due to an unfortunate take by several SMU officials, “Pony Up” is back. The blowback from a Dallas Morning News report about the athletic department’s marketing fiasco was so intense, officials apparently caved. Impact journalism at its finest.
In other Best in Texas news, Arch Manning put together his best game against a good team just in time, with Georgia up after the bye; with three games left, North Texas is two wins away from double digits for the first time in school history; and ESPN’s College GameDay will be in Lubbock, 17 years after the crew’s last trip for the Red Raiders’ epic upset of No. 1 Texas.
