Local pharmaceutical entrepreneur Jay Bhaumik is entering his next era with BMK Pharma.
The forthcoming 50,000-square-foot compounding pharmacy and drug manufacturing facility is slated to open in Allen next year, bringing more than 100 high-skill jobs.

Among other ventures, Bhaumik is the chief executive officer of Texas Star Pharmacy and Wellness Center, what’s known as a 503A compounding pharmacy. Such facilities are more customer-facing, producing custom drug formulations to fill patients’ prescriptions.
BMK Pharma, by contrast, will be a 503B facility, which Bhaumik described as a “business-to-business” pharmacy. Large health customers like hospital systems contract 503B compounding pharmacies to manufacture large batches for use within their systems. It will also be a contract development and manufacturing organization, which provides services from drug development through manufacturing.

The Idea Behind BMK Pharma
Bhaumik had the idea to start BMK Pharma after witnessing supply chain disruptions, many involving foreign manufacturers, cause drug shortages in the wake of the pandemic.
“I truly believe in manufacturing and ‘Made in America,’ and not being dependent on outside of the U.S. for our critical needs,” he said.
Last year, epinephrine, used for emergency allergic reaction situations, was in shortage, and the GLP-1 class of weight loss drugs only recently emerged from a yearslong supply squeeze.
Now, President Donald Trump’s proposed tariff of 200% on imported pharmaceuticals threatens supply even more.
Other Companies Getting Involved
Other independent D-FW companies are getting in on the rush for American-made drugs. Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drugs, which was founded in 2022 and primarily manufactures generic drugs, hopped in last year to send epinephrine and norepinephrine to hospitals during the shortage.
“We are not big pharma, so the funding, obviously, is not as easy, but I take that as a challenge, and we have the funding now and I’m very excited,” Bhaumik said. “I’m not looking back. I’m all in. We are building automation, building a lot of closed-loop systems. Quality is everything.”
BMK Pharma’s Plans and Timeline
Bhaumik said it took three years to accumulate the funding for the project. It will end up costing around $50 million. The warehouse will be located near the intersection of Exchange Parkway and the North Central Expressway and is already secured. It now needs to be fitted for pharmaceutical capabilities.
That aspect is currently in the planning phase, with teams working on a final blueprint that Bhaumik says he’ll take to the city of Allen in December. If all goes according to plan, construction will take six months and BMK Pharma will open for business in the third quarter of 2026.

The jobs at BMK Pharma will span automation engineers, chemists, researchers and, of course, pharmacists. Bhaumik said Allen provided access to the necessary talent, and the city is helping with hiring and training such a specialized workforce.
“The city of Allen has been very supportive of the venture, and I’m thankful for them,” Bhaumik said. “We interviewed in a few other North Texas cities, but the city of Allen had been the most receptive. So I’m very proud and love the location.”
