Fatal Shooting in Dallas: A Senseless Act of Violence

The victim in a fatal Tuesday shooting in Dallas was killed after an argument in which she allegedly got upset because a woman didn’t thank her for holding open a door, according to an arrest affidavit.

The Incident Unfolds

Dallas police responded to reports of a shooting about 1 p.m. Tuesday in the 2500 block of West Wheatland Road. Investigators determined Cecilia Simpson, 41, had been shot several times by a suspect who had left the scene.

Simpson was taken to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

A Dispute Over a Simple Act of Kindness

According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, a witness told police the shooting happened after an argument between Simpson and the suspect escalated into a physical altercation. The witness told police that she and Simpson were leaving a Five Below store at the same time as the suspect, later identified as Keona Hampton, 22, the affidavit said, and that Simpson held the door open for Hampton.

Simpson became upset because Hampton allegedly did not thank her for holding the door open. The two then began arguing before Simpson and the witness went to their car and drove to a PetSmart in the same shopping center. Hampton followed the two, the affidavit said.

A Series of Confrontations

Simpson and the witness went into the store and told employees they were being followed by Hampton, who then came into the PetSmart and began arguing again with the witness. Hampton left the store and came back, after which employees asked them to leave the store.

As Simpson and the witness were leaving in their car, Hampton allegedly threw a bottle at the car, which led Simpson to get out and begin arguing again with Hampton, the affidavit said. The argument then turned physical, and as the witness tried to break up the fight, Hampton pulled out a handgun and shot three times at Simpson and fled the scene, the affidavit said.

Arrest and Charges

Hampton was arrested later Tuesday after her car was seen on surveillance footage leaving the scene. She was booked into the Dallas County jail, where she faces a murder charge.
