Dr. Steven Shin Gains Popularity in Oklahoma

Dr. Steven Shin is quickly becoming a fan favorite in the state of Oklahoma. He can thank John Mateer for his newfound popularity.

Mateer took to social media Thursday to share a positive update on his season-altering hand injury. Mateer told his followers his hand surgery was successful and he shouted out Shin in the process.

“Thank God for a successful procedure. Dr. Shin is the GOAT. BOOMER SOONER!!” Mateer wrote on X/Twitter.

Endorsements for Dr. Shin

Mateer wasn’t the only one to offer a glowing endorsement of Shin. On Thursday evening, Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond issued a commendation for Shin. According to Drummond, Shin’s commendation was for “single-handedly saving” the quarterback’s season.

Shin is based in Los Angeles, working out of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Southern California.

John Mateer’s Injury and Recovery

Earlier this week, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables announced that Mateer sustained a right hand injury in Saturday’s win over Auburn. Venables said the expectation is that Mateer will return to action sometime this season.

Mateer, a Little Elm product, had quickly established himself as a Heisman favorite four games into his Oklahoma career. While leading the Sooners to a 4-0 record, Mateer had completed 67.4% of his passes for 1,215 passing yards and six touchdowns in the early going, adding another 190 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

Impact on the Team

With Mateer sidelined, sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. will start at quarterback for OU against Kent State on Saturday.

“We have all the confidence in the world in Michael and are excited for his opportunity to lead our offense while John recovers,” Venables said. “He had some big moments for us last season as a true freshman and has just gotten better and better. I’m proud of the work Michael’s put in and the progress he’s made, and know he will attack this opportunity to help lead our football team.”
