“Jim has served as a sage and trusted advisor and fundraiser for many organizations and his imprint can be felt throughout the Diocese of Dallas and beyond,” Matt Kramer, president and CEO of the foundation, said in the release.

Moroney was publisher of The News from 2001 to 2018 and is the 43rd annual recipient of the award.

Support for Local Organizations
The release praised Moroney’s support of Cistercian Preparatory School in Irving; Young Catholic Professionals, an Irving-headquartered nonprofit; and the Institute for Homiletics at the University of Dallas.
Moroney said in the release that his “biggest Holy Spirit-driven moment” was his support in establishing the Institute for Homiletics. He helped raise $7.5 million to fund the institute. The institute provides coaching, instruction and peer support to Catholic priests and deacons to help them improve their preaching.

“I want the Institute to make a difference so that people in the pew — through the homily — have a genuine encounter with the living God and walk out of church knowing and wanting to have a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ,” Moroney said in the release.
Moroney’s father, Jim Moroney Jr., received The Catholic Foundation Award in 2003.
Jim Moroney III’s Career
Jim Moroney III retired in 2018 as chairman, president and chief executive officer of A.H. Belo Corporation, The News’ parent company. The company changed its name to DallasNews Corporation in 2021.
