Walmart Expands in Dallas-Fort Worth Area with New Compact Store
Walmart is adding yet another store to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but this one will come in a more compact size. The massive retailer is set to begin construction on a “Neighborhood Market” this fall in Mesquite and to complete the site in late summer of 2026, according to Kelsey Bohl, spokesperson at Walmart in an emailed response to questions. The address is at 3100 E. Cartwright Road, putting it on the eastern side of the city.
What is a Neighborhood Market?
Neighborhood Markets are smaller versions of the Walmart Supercenters while still supplying many must-have items that locals have on their shopping lists. In roughly the past year, it’s opened the format in three spots, including in Florida and Alabama.

Unique Needs of Each Neighborhood
“By combining a smaller store format with a carefully curated assortment, these stores are designed to meet the unique needs of each neighborhood they serve,” Bohl said. It’s a format that Walmart has already opened in many spots around North Texas in cities such as Plano, Dallas and Flower Mound. Mesquite has another Neighborhood Market six miles to the northwest near Town East Mall.
Competition in the Market
The company, dealing with rising competition from rivals such as Target and H-E-B, is investing in the growing local region as it seeks to attract more customers. It’s updating some stores while adding new ones. Walmart plans to open new Supercenters in Frisco, Melissa and Celina throughout the next year, Bohl said.
Why Mesquite?
“Walmart chose Mesquite because Texas is one of the fastest-growing states in the country, with North Texas experiencing especially tremendous growth,” Bohl said. “We’re committed to meeting the evolving needs of our customers, and Mesquite represents a dynamic, expanding community.”
Other Chains Reassessing Their Lineups
The new store comes as other chains are reassessing their lineups, including Kroger, which has said it’s closing a couple of stores in D-FW while looking to expand. Tom Thumb also is closing two stores while planning to extend its reach in the region.

Walmart’s expansion plans in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are a testament to the company’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its customers. With the new Neighborhood Market in Mesquite, Walmart is poised to provide convenient and affordable shopping options to the community.
