The Dallas Stars are parting ways with another player from their 2024-25 roster.
The Stars traded defenseman Matt Dumba and a 2028 second-round pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday in exchange for defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok, the team announced.
Dumba had one year remaining on a two-year deal he signed with the Stars last offseason. The Stars, who were over the cap after the start of free agency, are now cap compliant after moving Dumba’s $3.75 million cap hit.
Sports Roundup
The Stars have just under $2 million remaining in cap space to add one final forward to complete their roster.
Dumba recorded just 10 points and 60 penalty minutes in 63 regular-season games last season. A midseason injury was the start of the setbacks, and he was ultimately a healthy scratch throughout the playoff run.
Former Stars coach Pete DeBoer entrusted his role to Alexander Petrovic, who played the entire regular season in the AHL.
Many considered Dumba a top buyout candidate this offseason, but a trade is far more beneficial in terms of saving the team cap space this year and in the future. It turned out there was a market for Dumba, and Nill found a destination for the defenseman, though he had to sacrifice a second-round draft pick to do so.
Kolyachonok, 24, is entering the final season of a two-year contract where he makes the league minimum $775,000. Pittsburgh had claimed the Belarusian defenseman off waivers from Utah in February.
He has appeared in 74 NHL games with Pittsburgh and Utah/Arizona over the past four seasons, scoring 14 points (4 goals, 10 assists). He appeared in 35 games last season between the two franchises, the most in his career, and averaged 12:20 of ice time in Utah and 14:20 in Pittsburgh.
He will likely compete for a depth spot on the blue line in camp.
The Stars now have just two right-shot defensemen on their roster: Ilya Lyubushkin and Nils Lundkvist. Left-shot Miro Heiskanen is expected to continue to play on his nondominant side, and Petrovic could compete for a spot in camp as well.
Esa Lindell, Thomas Harley and Lian Bichsel are expected to fill out the Stars’ left side.
