Texas Tech Coach Discusses WR Micah Hudson’s Re-Recruitment

Re-Recruitment of Micah Hudson: A New Chapter for Texas Tech

FRISCO — In an offseason full of transfer portal moves, one of Texas Tech’s most important additions was a familiar face.

On Tuesday at Big 12 Media Days, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire spoke about his re-recruitment of wide receiver Micah Hudson.

The Temple Lake Belton star had a whirlwind offseason, transferring from Texas Tech to Texas A&M. After a very brief stint in College Station, Hudson announced his Lubbock return in April.

The Re-Recruitment Process

According to McGuire, a conversation with Hudson’s mother was key to the process. When Hudson left A&M in April, McGuire called the receiver’s mother to let her know he planned on reaching out to the former five-star recruit. Hudson’s mother told the Tech coach to expect a face-to-face meeting.

“The first thing I did before he even started talking, I said, ‘Micah, let me open up and tell you what I feel like I did wrong and what I would do different if I could do it over again,’” McGuire said. “I think that we’ve had a really good relationship. It got strained at the end and I think that really kind of opened that and took some of the barriers down.”

Mistakes and Lessons Learned

McGuire later elaborated on some of the mistakes he previously made with Hudson. The head coach said he placed pressure on Hudson by being vocal about the receiver’s playing availability.

While breaking down how he would handle the situation differently, McGuire added that he would have pushed for a veteran player to sign on to the inaugural Adidas-sponsored Team Mahomes cohort at Tech.

Expectations and Pressure

“That’s a lot of pressure to carry as a freshman,” McGuire said.

Expectations were notably high for Hudson, who was the first five-star recruit in Texas Tech’s program history.

Hudson also endured some injury setbacks in his freshman season. Before the 2024 campaign began, he was sidelined through the spring with a knee injury. He later suffered another injury that caused him to miss four games to end the regular season.

“It’s always hard to deal with injuries, but if you’ve never been injured and this is the first true injury that you’re missing playing time, it really affects you mentally,” McGuire said.

Progress and Development

Hudson finished his freshman season with eight catches for 123 yards.

Since Hudson returned, McGuire has given the receiver two key tasks to focus on: being on time and emptying the tank at practice.

McGuire added that the young receiver has taken positive steps in recent practices, becoming a “silent assassin” while focusing on the task at hand.

Quarterback Behren Morton is among those impressed with the progress Hudson has made ahead of his sophomore season.

“It just kind of takes time learning the way of college football,” Morton said. “He had a lot of pressure on his shoulders, being the first five-star to commit to Tech. He’s in a much better headspace now. He’s been doing a great job this summer, putting his head down and going to work.”

Looking Ahead to the Future

After strengthening its roster with multiple highly-rated transfers, Tech enters 2025 with lofty goals. Hudson’s development will be key for McGuire’s squad moving forward.
