Penberthy spent three seasons in Los Angeles from 2019-22 and was an assistant coach for the New Orleans Pelicans in 2018-19.

The Mavericks’ coaching staff has undergone a lot of change during the offseason. In the past week, assistant Jared Dudley finalized a deal to join the Denver Nuggets and player development coach God Shammgod agreed to join Jamahl Mosley’s Orlando Magic staff as an assistant coach.

Last month, Kidd’s top assistant Sean Sweeney agreed to join the San Antonio Spurs as an associate head coach under Mitch Johnson. Former assistant Alex Jensen also departed to take over as the University of Utah’s next men’s basketball coach.

Penberthy is the third new member for Kidd’s staff, joining Vogel and longtime NBA assistant Jay Triano.
