The crash occurred after a semi-truck driver, 27-year-old Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, fell asleep while driving, Bradford said.
According to Kaufman County jail records, Gonzalez-Companioni faces five counts of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, with bail set at $1.5 million. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
Breaking News
The semi-truck collided with a Ford F-150 carrying five people, then pushed into two other semi-trucks, Bradford said. One of the trucks jackknifed, hitting a Jeep Compass, a Ford Mustang and a Honda passenger vehicle, he said.
A preliminary investigation indicates that traffic on I-20 was already backed up due to a previous crash.

The crash involved seven vehicles, including three 18-wheelers and four passenger vehicles, according to the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department.
The investigation is ongoing, Bradford said, and no further information is currently available.
The highway reopened all lanes about 9:24 p.m. on Saturday, according to Terrell Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Terry Van Sickle Jr.
