Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Flossie formed off Mexico’s southwest coast. It was located about 235 miles south of Acapulco and was moving west-northwest at 8 mph with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.

A tropical storm watch was in effected for Mexico’s southwest coast from Zihuatanejo to Cabo Corrientes.

Flossie is expected to become a hurricane late Monday or Tuesday, but remains in open waters just west of Mexico.

Forecasters said the storm could dump three to six inches of rain with an isolated maximum total of 10 inches across parts of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco through early next week.

The slow start of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season did not see the first named storm form last week. What would have been Tropical Storm Andrea remained out in the middle of the Atlantic, where it spun for less than a day with no threat to land.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, though, still forecasts this year 13 to 19 named storms this year, of which 6-10 will become hurricanes. Three to five of those are predicted to grow into major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher.

Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
