The 2025 college football season will be here before you know it. Teams are already practicing out in the heat, preparing for Week 1 kickoff in late August/early September.
It’s set to be a juicy season around these parts, as well, with several area colleges like Texas, Oklahoma, SMU and Texas A&M having high hopes for the 2025 campaign and, in particular, for their guy under center.
Below is a ranking of the top 10 starting quarterbacks for area colleges heading into the 2025 season.
10. Garret Rangel, Oklahoma State

The Cowboys and Mike Gundy along with new OK State offensive coordinator Doug Meacham will have a decision to make come August. Their starter could be one of as many as four potential candidates.
The favorite might be Rangel, who started a game last season after OK State benched Alan Bowman. But there’s also Aledo product and mobile threat Hauss Hejny, Zane Floris and Maealiuaki Smith, who started the last two games of last season as a true freshman.
9. Reese Poffenbarger, North Texas
Will it be Poffenbarger or will it be Drew Mestemaker? The Mean Green, like the Cowboys, also have a decision to make.
Poffenbarger is a highly touted transfer grab from Miami who appeared in just one game last season behind NFL No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward. Mestemaker is the incumbent who wowed in the First Responder Bowl last season, his only start of the year.
8. Owen McCown, UTSA
The Dallas-born son of former NFL quarterback Josh McCown is set to return as QB1 for the Roadrunners. He started all 13 games for UTSA last season, throwing for 3,424 yards and 25 touchdowns and capping it off with a win in the Myrtle Beach Bowl.
7. Marcel Reed, Texas A&M
After an atrocious start to the season for Conner Weigman, Marcel Reed took over for the Aggies in what was the first season of Mike Elko’s tenure in 2024. A&M lost four of its last five games to finish 8-5. It was a rough shake for the freshman Reed, who now returns as the starter looking to build off flashes of brilliance in 2024.

6. Behren Morton, Texas Tech
Returning for his fifth year with the Red Raiders, Morton started every game for Tech but one last season and managed quite a strong campaign despite suffering a collarbone injury that required surgery at the end of the season. Morton threw for 3,335 yards, 27 touchdowns and eight interceptions, and with Tech hitting the transfer portal hard during the offseason, he’ll have more talent surrounding him in his final season in Lubbock.

5. Sawyer Robertson, Baylor
Robertson and the Bears may have saved their head coach’s job with their late streak in 2024 that saw Baylor win its final six games of the regular season. The duo of Robertson and coach Dave Aranda will return for another season in Waco, Robertson likely battling with the next guy on this list for the title of the Big 12’s best QB.

4. Josh Hoover, TCU
A report by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram attested that Hoover turned down a lucrative offer from Tennessee to remain the Horned Frogs’ quarterback. The Heath native will return for his junior season after passing for nearly 4,000 yards last year (he finished seventh in passing yards in the country) and leading the Frogs to a win in the New Mexico Bowl.

3. Kevin Jennings, SMU
The Mustangs’ QB and former South Oak Cliff star had the most success last season of anyone on this list, leading SMU to its first-ever appearance in the ACC Championship game and then the College Football Playoff. Unfortunately for Jennings, that’s where the success stopped. He posted a QB Rating of just 13.4 in their CFP loss against Penn State, throwing three interceptions and rushing for a season-low -25 yards. He’ll look to bounce back and lead the Mustangs into ACC contention once again in 2025.
2. John Mateer, Oklahoma
The Sooners caught a big fish in Lake Transfer Portal.
Mateer was fantastic for Washington State in 2024, passing for 3,139 yards and rushing for close to 1,000 more. The biggest question for Mateer will be how he handles the transition from lowly Pac-12 competition to the big boys in the SEC. That, and if he and the Sooners’ on-field performance will be enough to cool down the scorching-hot seat of OU head coach Brent Venables.

Is the hype for real? We’ll finally find out.
Gone is Quinn Ewers to the NFL, and in comes the Arch Show, with the son of Cooper and nephew of Peyton and Eli the next in line to lead the Longhorns. The No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2023 has marinated on the bench for the past two seasons under Steve Sarkisian, serving in a part-time role last season as fill-in for a banged-up Ewers and as a mobile threat in certain offensive situations. Now, it’s all Manning, the sophomore stepping into the spotlight and entering the season as the betting favorite to win the Heisman Trophy according to Vegas.
