Arlington Double Homicide: 5 Suspects Arrested and Charged with Capital Murder
Arlington police have arrested five people who face charges of capital murder in a 2024 double homicide. The two victims, Dayton Allen, 19, and Alexis Tyler, 18, were shot and killed at a short-term rental near AT&T Stadium in November. Police responded at about 10:20 p.m. on Nov. 23 to the 600 block of Slaughter Street on a shots fired call and found the two shot in the apartment’s living room.
The Investigation and Arrests
The suspects were identified by police as Chrisaveon Whitted, 18, Eddie Walker Jr., 19, Demarian Owens, 21, Shannon Steele, 20, and Diamond Curttie, 26. According to an Arlington police news release, Tyler had rented the apartment to celebrate Allen’s birthday; Curttie, a relative of Allen, was invited along with the other suspects, who were friends of Allen’s.
How the Suspects Were Caught
Cell phone records showed the five suspects met up in Dallas before traveling to Arlington. Surveillance footage from the apartment complex showed the suspects arrived at the apartment complex wearing hoodies that covered their faces. They all left the apartment complex together shortly after the shots were fired.
Detectives were able to tie the car to one of the suspects, and later obtained surveillance footage showing one of the suspects returning home the night of the killing wearing the same clothes seen on the footage at the scene of the homicide.
Motive for the Crime
Family members of Allen’s told police the suspects may have been feuding with Allen over money, police said.
Charges and Bail
Steele and Curttie were being held Friday at the Dallas County jail, while Whitted, Walker and Owens were at the Tarrant County jail. In addition to the capital murder charge, Steele faces a slew of charges from previous cases, including a separate murder charge.
Bail was set at $1 million for each suspect on the capital murder charge. Steele is being held on over $2 million bail due to the additional charges he faces.
