Nelly Korda: The World’s No. 1-Ranked Golfer
FRISCO – Yes, Nelly Korda is the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer and, yes, this is KPMG Women’s PGA Championship week and she’s playing the Fields Ranch East Course at PGA Frisco for the first time.
But first things first: Nelly, how much are you looking forward to next month’s release on Netflix of “Happy Gilmore 2″ and seeing yourself in a cameo role?
It seemed to be a worthwhile Tuesday question for Korda, 26, especially since other golfers making cameo appearances in the film are fellow No. 1-ranked Scottie Scheffler of Dallas and a gaggle of other high-profile local residents: Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau and Will Zalatoris.
Korda said of her single day on the set, “It was so much fun. Got to do it alongside Nancy Lopez, which was super fun. To meet Adam Sandler and just be part of that whole experience kind of stepping outside my comfort zone was a lot of fun, and I’m super grateful I was part of it.”
Nelly Korda’s Experience with TaylorMade
It wasn’t her first time filming with Scheffler. Late last year, with Korda coming off a seven-win LPGA season and Scheffler winning seven times on the PGA Tour, they were among the golf stars who spent two days taping advertisements for TaylorMade.
Two weeks ago, TaylorMade released an 11-minute YouTube video of Scheffler and Korda squaring off in a closest-to-the-hole competition, with each player hitting five shots from three different stations. You’ll have to watch the video to see who won.
“I get to see the guys that represent TaylorMade, and we all get to kind of spend time together, talk about our seasons,” Korda said. “And at the end of the day, create fun content that maybe we normally wouldn’t do for fans out there.
“It’s fun getting to do something with Tiger; getting to do something with Scottie.”
Nelly Korda’s Injury and Recovery
Korda got so many off-the-course questions Tuesday that it wasn’t until later in the interview that a reporter noticed kinetic tape on her neck. Korda revealed that while playing a practice round Monday on the East Course, her neck went into “full spasm” after she hit a shot out of the thick rough.
The injury caused 2021 KPMG PGA Champion Korda to miss Monday night’s tournament champions dinner while getting treatment. Korda sustained a neck injury last season and said Monday’s incident was the latest of occasional flare-ups.
She was able to play a nine-hole pro-am round on Tuesday despite continued discomfort.
“Obviously, with the injury that I had last year, every single time something kind of flares up in my neck now,” she said. “I think I feel it a little bit more than what I used to.
“But I have a great physio [trainer] who takes care of me. Trying to work through it, but I’ll be ready by [opening round] Thursday.”
She added with a Netflix-caliber smile: “Just golf.”
