Double Homicide in Arlington Apartment Complex

Arlington police said Monday that a 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a double homicide that occurred last week at an apartment complex.

Police said after a “thorough” investigation, Arlington homicide detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Xavier Weddington on a capital murder charge.

Members of the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force found Weddington in Grand Prairie on Friday and took him into custody without incident.

Weddington was being held in Tarrant County jail Monday afternoon on a $1 million bond, records show. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Crime Scene and Investigation

On May 29, at about 5:10 p.m., officers responded to the Paddock on Park Row Apartments in the 400 block of W. Park Row Drive. There, officers found brothers 17-year-old Jason Cuevas and 21-year-old Bryan Cuevas “outside one of the buildings with gunshot wounds,” police said in a news release.

The two brothers were taken to an area hospital, where they died from their injuries, police said.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m., police said 911 dispatchers received a call saying a man, later identified as Weddington, had been shot in the leg. Officers responded to the 2500 block of Sherry Street — about 3.7 miles from the crime scene.

Weddington’s Story and Witness Account

Police said Weddington told officers that he left the apartment complex and was walking to a relative’s home “when an unknown suspect began shooting at him from a vehicle.” Police said Weddington provided “vague responses” to questions and his story had “inconsistencies.”

A witness later came forward and told detectives they saw the shooting and recognized Weddington as the shooter. Weddington was also identified by the witness in a photo lineup, according to police.

Police did not immediately say who shot Weddington. Information about his condition was not immediately disclosed Monday.

Investigation Timeline and Findings

Detectives found out that Weddington regularly stays at an apartment nearby, police said in the news release.

Police also said they confirmed that one of Weddington’s friends picked him up from the scene and drove him to the location on Sherry Street, which police said is consistent with the timeline. Police did not say how they put together the timeline of events.

Police said investigators believe the two brothers arranged to meet with Weddington at the apartment complex to “complete a high-risk transaction” and things went awry. Authorities recovered “multiple firearms” at the scene.

Ongoing Investigation

No additional information was available, however police said the investigation is ongoing.

Conclusion

The arrest of Xavier Weddington in connection with the double homicide at the Arlington apartment complex brings some closure to the community, but the investigation is still ongoing. The police are working to piece together the events of that day and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
