Introduction to National Donut Day

Doughnuts get their day on Friday, June 6, 2025, for National Donut Day. While it’s true that we celebrate doughnuts more than one day a year, this special day is a great excuse to indulge in these sweet treats. The Salvation Army created Donut Day in 1938, inspired by the Donut Lassies who handed out doughnuts to soldiers in France during World War I. This mission continued during the Great Depression and into today, with the Salvation Army of North Texas serving healthcare workers at Dallas-area hospitals during the coronavirus pandemic.

You can celebrate National Donut Day by eating a sweet pastry, and we’ve got you covered with a list of 6 delicious doughnut shops in Dallas-Fort Worth, one of the country’s “doughnut capitals.” Some of these shops might be giving away free doughnuts, so be sure to ask. The latest food and drink reviews, recipes, and info on the D-FW food scene can be found on Eat Drink D-FW.

Detour Doughnuts and Coffee

For some of the most colorful doughnuts in Dallas-Fort Worth, head to Detour in Frisco. Owner Jinny Cho, an entrepreneur born in South Korea, says she believed the region needed “a different kind of doughnut: a gourmet doughnut.” Her creations are creative, beautiful, and always changing. This month’s flavors include strawberry s’mores and key lime pie. Detour Doughnuts and Coffee is located at 8161 Farm-to-Market Road 423, Frisco.
