Response and Investigation

During a news conference at the scene Thursday afternoon, police said the other two other children were stable following the crash.

An adult who was struck by the vehicle was also said to be listed as stable.

Dallas Independent School District spokesperson Robyn Harris said the three children who were struck were students at Botello Elementary, and that the adult who was struck is a parent of two of the children: The boy who died and one of the girls who was hurt.

Harris said the children were struck while crossing the street after being dismissed from school.

Harris called the incident “heartbreaking” and said that the district will have mental health resources available on Friday for students and staff at the school, which is located at 225 S. Marsalis Ave.

“It’s a very heavy moment and time for that community,” Harris said. “We’re going to wrap our arms around the families who were affected.”

Driver and Charges

Investigators said the driver, who was not immediately identified, remained at the scene following the collision. When asked if the driver would face charges in connection with the fatal wreck, authorities said “this just remains an accident at this time.”

After the crash, several police cruisers from Dallas ISD and the Dallas Police Department were at the scene as officers investigated the deadly collision. Officers were seen photographing a pickup truck with a handicapped placard at the scene.

Crime scene tape was erected at the location as several onlookers from a nearby apartment complex stood outside to observe the scene.
