About Mexican Oak

“It’ll be a little more high-end, authentic Mexican, but we are trying to price it so that everyone can come and enjoy it because we know it’s a college town,” Morgan Bohannan said to The Dallas Morning News. “But we also want to serve those who want to come out and enjoy a nice night, so we’re trying to make it a place for everyone.”

The restaurant’s décor will include Mexican-inspired elements.

Cuisine and Menu

Heading the kitchen will be executive chef Jorge Romero, who will bring the original flavors of authentic Mexican cuisine with dishes from a variety of regions. There will be some American options, too, for those who want a more familiar taste.

“The menu will have dishes from both northern Mexico, with more dry ingredients, red sauces, and meat, and from the south, with fresher and greener ingredients,” Romero told The News. “We will have Mexican dishes not just from one region but from as many regions as possible, from Yucatan to Baja.”

Among the dishes that will be served are cochinita pibil tacos, cauliflower al pastor, enchiladas and beef barbacoa. They will also offer freshly made white and blue corn tortillas.

Chef Jorge Romero

Romero, who is also executive chef at The Barrel, was born in Mexico City, grew up in Chicago and has lived in Texas for nearly three decades — outside of a short stint during which he opened Mexican restaurants in Dubai, India and China.

With Mexican Oak, he plans to incorporate his parents’ culinary heritage into the menu.

Mexican Oak will open before summer 2025.

Menu Inspiration

“My mother was from Zacatecas, where they cook with dried chiles with very elaborate dishes, and my dad was from Veracruz, a place full of color and fresh things, so the menu will carry a little bit of everything,” Romero said.
