Neiman Marcus Store in Downtown Dallas to Remain Open
The Neiman Marcus store in downtown Dallas will remain open through the 2025 holiday season, store and city officials said Friday.
Saks Global, the owner of Neiman Marcus, said it will keep the store open while it “explores a reimagination of the location in collaboration with the City of Dallas.”
“We deeply admire the city’s passion and unwavering dedication to Neiman Marcus’ storied legacy in Dallas. The potential reimagination of this iconic shopping destination reinforces Saks Global’s commitment to redefining the luxury shopping experience,” Marc Metrick, chief executive officer of Saks Global, said in a statement.
“As we explore opportunities for the Downtown store, along with the planned renovation at the NorthPark store, we will evaluate the opportunity to utilize both locations to serve different customer needs in the Dallas market.”
Background and History
The announcement comes after Dallas City Council held off on accepting a land donation of a parcel of dirt under the building earlier this week. City officials wanted to assist in talks to keep the retailer open past a March 31 deadline set by Saks Global.
Saks announced in February that it would close the store, citing a dispute with one of the parties who owns the land under the building, later identified as descendants of C.C. Slaughter — a Dallas pioneer, banker, philanthropist and the first native-born cattle king of Texas.
A consortium of civic leaders and city officials worked to solve the land dispute, but Saks insisted the store would remain closed. Saks officials said last week that it agreed to talk with Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert.
Reaction and Future Plans
Jennifer Scripps, president and CEO of Downtown Dallas Inc. and a key player in the consortium, said Friday’s announcement was a “win on so many levels.”
“This is Christmas-comes-early for downtown Dallas,” she said. “I could not be more heartened for the way everybody came together with tremendous leadership from City Hall and Kim Tolbert. … We have an opportunity, and we’re going to make the most of the runway we have, knowing that we can do great things if we all work together.”
Tolbert said in a statement that the city is committed to continuing conversations about the property’s future.
“We are excited that Saks Global has decided to keep Neiman Marcus open downtown, as we explore the opportunity to unlock the potential to transform downtown into an international beacon and economic engine for fashion — just as the Neiman Marcus founders intended when they opened the store more than 100 years ago,” Tolbert said.
The Zodiac Room and the store’s bridal salon will remain open during this period, Saks officials said.
Potential concepts for the historic space include “a luxury retail experience, a curated art exhibition and a fashion and event center.” Saks officials said the downtown building could also serve as an incubator for fashion design and manufacturing.
