Arrest and Investigation of Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy, a former Texas standout, was arrested Friday night in Williamson County.

According to a jail record from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, Worthy was booked for assault against a family or household member by impeding their breathing or circulation. Per Texas state law, that charge is a third-degree felony.

Dismissal of the Case

On Saturday evening, Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick told the Austin American-Statesman that after speaking to several witnesses his office would not be accepting the case at this time. The county record says the case was “Dismissed/Declined” and that Worthy was released Saturday.

Xavier Worthy’s Background

Worthy, 21, recently finished his rookie campaign with the Chiefs. Kansas City selected the former Longhorns receiver with the 28th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. He caught 59 passes for 638 yards and six touchdowns last season.

Performance in Super Bowl LIX

The receiver was key in Kansas City’s latest run to Super Bowl LIX, catching eight passes for 157 yards and two scores against Philadelphia in February.

Response from the Chiefs and Worthy’s Attorneys

“We are aware and gathering information,” the Chiefs said in a statement given to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

In a statement given to the Austin American-Statesman, Worthy’s attorneys, Sam Bassett and Chip Lewis, said they are cooperating with Williamson County law enforcement’s investigation.

“We are aware of the allegation that led to Mr. Worthy’s arrest,” the statement read. “We are working with law enforcement in Williamson County to ensure they have the benefit of the totality of circumstances that led to this allegation.

“The complainant was recently asked to vacate Mr. Worthy’s residence upon discovery of her infidelity. She has refused to do so and made a number of extortive efforts prior to resorting to this baseless allegation against Mr. Worthy.

“We will continue to cooperate with the Williamson County authorities as we have full faith that their thorough investigation will support Mr. Worthy’s innocence.”

Previous Incidents Involving Chiefs Receivers

Worthy is the latest Chiefs receiver to face legal issues. Last offseason, Rashee Rice was involved in a major, multivehicle collision on Easter weekend in Dallas. Rice and Theodore Knox are both facing eight charges for their role in the hit-and-run crash.

Rice turned himself into authorities and was booked into a DeSoto jail in April 2024.

The NFL hasn’t taken any action against Rice as of yet.
