A Richardson Man Allegedly Kills His Roommate Over a Rude Comment and "Difficult Roommate" Behavior
The Incident
Douglas Van Ervin, 81, was arrested last week after officials said he called 911 around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday to report that he had shot and killed his roommate, 59-year-old Gregory Johnson.
The Investigation
According to the affidavit, officers responded to the 1110 block of Wake Drive and found Ervin standing on the front porch of the home with his hands up. Ervin then told police that another roommate and the victim were inside the residence. Officers found Johnson inside the home, and responding paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
The Roommate’s Account
Ervin’s other roommate told police that he was in his room when he heard a loud popping noise. He came outside and saw Johnson lying on the floor and saw Ervin holding a shotgun, which police later recovered from the residence.
Ervin’s Confession
Ervin was taken into custody and agreed to speak to officers without an attorney present. During his interview with police, Ervin told detectives that Johnson had been a "difficult roommate" in the last month, leaving the front door open, leaving lights on and the water running, and failing to pay his share of the rent. Ervin also stated that Johnson had repeatedly made rude comments towards him.
The Triggering Incident
On the night of the shooting, Ervin told police that he became enraged after Johnson made a rude comment, which led Ervin to grab a shotgun and fire once at Johnson. Ervin then called 911 to report the shooting.
Charges and Custody
Ervin faces charges of murder and, as of Tuesday, was in the custody of the Dallas County jail on $200,000 bail. It was not immediately clear if Ervin had retained an attorney.
