Arrest Made in Slaying of 18-Year-Old in Southeast Oak Cliff

A suspect has been arrested in the late-January killing of an 18-year-old in southeast Oak Cliff, according to public records. Nygel Page, 18, was booked into the Dallas County jail on February 10, 2023, and faces a murder charge.

Suspect Remains in Custody

As of Wednesday morning, Page remained in custody on a $500,000 bail. It is unclear whether he has an attorney.

Victim Identified

A probable-cause affidavit tied to Page’s arrest lists James Rust as the victim. The affidavit also notes that multiple people who were involved in or witnessed the shooting were in high school.

Details of the Shooting

Rust died after being shot on the afternoon of January 26, 2023, in the 3600 block of Moonstone Drive, near Highland Hills Drive. Detectives determined that Rust was shot at the location before being driven in a private vehicle to a hospital in Lancaster, where he was pronounced dead.

Gun Transaction Gone Wrong

Rust was shot multiple times inside a home when he went to the location to "make a gun transaction," according to the arrest-warrant affidavit. At least one person went to the location with Rust and remained outside in their car while Rust went inside a house. After hearing multiple gunshots, the person called someone else to tell them Rust may have been injured, according to the affidavit.

Witnesses Come Forward

Eventually, the person who was at the scene of the shooting, the person who was called, and two other people went into the home and found Rust lying on the floor, an officer wrote in the affidavit. The four witnesses put Rust into the car and took him to the hospital. They all were questioned by police.

Eyewitness Account

Another witness who was with Page at the time of the shooting said Page pulled a gun on Rust and told him to "give up his property," to which Rust responded, "Don’t do me like that," before Page shot Rust, according to the affidavit. Page allegedly removed a gun from Rust’s waistband and a second person also identified as a "suspect" in the report went through Rust’s pockets, taking any property, an officer wrote.

Investigation Ongoing

It is not immediately clear if any additional arrests are pending.
