The smallest of kids at South Shore Fine Arts Academy stepped outside into the sun after school on Monday and were confused by the commotion.<\/p>\n
Children were yelling. Parents and staff were pointing up at the school\u2019s roof. Students stopped in their tracks, turned around, and saw the visitor.<\/p>\n
Some wondered if the person dressed in all red was Santa Claus. Pretty quickly, word spread that it was the Elf on the Shelf.<\/p>\n
\u201cSomebody take a picture!\u201d a little girl yelled.<\/p>\n
A young boy asked: \u201cHow did she get on the roof?\u201d<\/p>\n
Principal Vicki Brown, donning a red costume, hat, and shoes, stood atop the school holding a clipboard with a sign that read \u201cI\u2019m making a list and checking it twice.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOur principal having this creative idea to do it for the students, it\u2019s just phenomenal,\u201d said Tangela Echols, a special education classroom assistant, who called the kids\u2019 reactions \u201cpriceless.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe always engages. Anything we have in the school, she participates,\u201d Echols said of the principal.<\/p>\n
Brown said she dressed up as Elf on the Shelf to keep students interested in coming to class the final week before winter break.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s awesome to be able to give our students a \u2018remember when\u2019 moment,\u201d Brown said. \u201cI could hear them say, \u2018Wow! Is she Santa? And then I could hear the kids say \u2018No, she\u2019s Elf on the Shelf! And so it was just a great feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n
The elf is expected to make appearances at the school the rest of the week. Tuesday, she sat atop a milk cooler in the cafeteria to monitor whether students behaved at lunch. Her observations throughout the week will feed into this year\u2019s naughty and nice list.<\/p>\n
Christopher Strong, whose son is in 4th grade at South Shore, said he was \u201cshocked\u201d to see the principal on the roof when he arrived for after-school pickup.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love this school; they\u2019re always doing different things,\u201d Strong said. \u201cIt makes them want to come. My son is up before me, excited for school.\u201d<\/p>\n
Not all the kids were tricked by the elf\u2019s appearance, though.<\/p>\n
A teacher asked a student if they knew who was on the roof, looking for the answer \u201cElf on the Shelf.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI do know who that is,\u201d the girl responded. \u201cIt\u2019s Ms. Brown.\u201d<\/p>\n
The creative idea of dressing up as Elf on the Shelf has brought excitement and joy to the students at South Shore Fine Arts Academy. The principal’s effort to keep students engaged and motivated has paid off, and the students will surely remember this special moment.<\/p>\n
