Christmas is less than two weeks away \u2013 and there\u2019s a last-minute gift idea at the Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza.<\/p>\n

A Tradition Continues<\/h2>\n

Frank Weschler said he has visited the traditional German holiday market downtown every year for nearly three decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst, we go to go to the candy hut. After that we pop over to the gl\u00fchwein hut and get yourself your ceramic mug. And lastly, you got to go look at the cuckoo clocks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n

Clock seller Niklas Wendler brings the authentic hand-crafted clocks from the Black Forest in southwestern Germany.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will not find these from anywhere else than from the Black Forest,\u201d Wendler said.<\/p>\n\n

The mechanical clocks are ingeniously engineered to use gravity and a pendulum to summon the cuckoo call when the hour strikes.<\/p>\n

The carved wooden clocks display scenes from German towns, like children playing and adults working \u2013 chopping wood, cooking food, and pulling rope.<\/p>\n

\u201cDifferent figurines, different moving parts, different stories,\u201d Wendler said. \u201cYou can take so much time to look at these.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

There is a comedic quality to the clock. It\u2019s fun and functional.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what the Germans love, function in all of the things they do \u2013 and as soon as you combine the aesthetic and the function, that\u2019s where we start here,\u201d Wendler said.<\/p>\n\n

It\u2019s an item that eventually becomes an heirloom.<\/p>\n

Brian Boeke, a market visitor said he admired the craftsmanship of the clocks. \u201cI look at \u2018em every year we come here and one of these days I\u2019m going home with one,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n

The clocks can range in price from $35 up to $1000 depending on how big and complicated they are.<\/p>\n\n
