A man is due in court Monday accused of shooting two men aboard a CTA Pink Line train last month in the Loop. Pedro Villareal, 34, is charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, unlawful use of a weapon, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, police said. Villareal, of the 800 block of South Pulaski Road, was also cited with trespassing on the CTA without paying.<\/p>\n
The shooting happened on Dec. 23, 2025 in the 100 block of North Wells Street and left Raymond Harrison, 44, dead, officials said. The second victim, a 23-year-old man was injured during the attack, which began with an argument involving a third man armed with a knife. Harrison and the 23-year-old were riding the train around 1:20 a.m. when they began arguing with the knife-wielding man.<\/p>\n
When the argument turned physical, one of the men pulled a gun, but the man with the knife then \u201cgained control of the weapon and discharged\u201d it at the two men, according to officials. A witness who was riding the same train told responding officers he heard the alleged shooter say, \u201cI shot them, but they tried to rob me,\u201d according to a police report obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.<\/p>\n
The fatal shooting comes after several high-profile attacks on the CTA. Citing a November attack on a Blue Line train, in which a man poured gasoline on a 26-year-old woman and set her on fire, the administration of President Donald Trump demanded the CTA implement new security measures or face a cut in funding. In mid-December, the CTA announced it was adding officers to its Chicago Police Department transit detail, increasing officers by as many as 120 more per day.<\/p>\n
But the federal government said the plan was insufficient, and gave the CTA until March 19 to submit a revised plan that addresses the Federal Transit Administration\u2019s concerns. Otherwise, the CTA will lose up to $50 million in funding.<\/p>\n
