GRAND BOULEVARD \u2014 Six years after expanding to Rosenwald Courts, Sip & Savor owner Trez Pugh III is closing his coffee shop in the historic Bronzeville apartment complex.<\/p>\n
Pugh shared the news on Instagram Tuesday, telling followers the cafe, 78 E. 47th St., will shut down Monday. The news comes after thieves targeted the cafe twice within a five-day span in September.<\/p>\n
The space will still be available for rentals and special events, according to the post.<\/p>\n
The Sip & Savor at 528 E. 43rd St. will extend its hours to 6 p.m. Thursday-Sunday to accommodate customers, according to the post. The cafe\u2019s three other locations in Edgewater, Hyde Park and the South Loop remain open.<\/p>\n
Sip & Savor was one of the first retail tenants to open inside of the renovated Rosenwald Courts in 2019, joining Shawn Michelle\u2019s Homemade Ice Cream in an effort to revitalize the area. But business has been rough for the coffee house, with Pugh telling Block Club in a previous interview the rising tariffs put a strain on his shop.<\/p>\n
Pugh partnered with Turner Haus Brewery, which opened a taproom at the Rosenwald location in 2023. The Black-owned brewery recently announced it was shutting down operations and focusing on private events.<\/p>\n
The closure of Sip & Savor Coffee Shop in Bronzeville marks the end of an era for the community. Despite efforts to revitalize the area, the coffee shop faced numerous challenges, including rising tariffs and recent thefts. The space will still be available for rentals and special events, and other locations will extend their hours to accommodate customers.<\/p>\n
