The quarterback will be judged by everything that happens before and after the snap: how he calls the play, how quickly he gets to the line of scrimmage, when he sends receivers in motion, how he identifies the middle linebacker, how he calls audibles \u2026 and then what he does with the ball in his hand.
\n\u201cThat sets the tone for the entire play \u2014 just the way we communicate within the huddle, everybody is looking for their bit of information from the quarterback as well,\u201d pass game coordinator Press Taylor said this week. \u201cIt\u2019s got to come out smooth, kind of rhythmic cadence to it. But that is essentially what begins the entire operation of the play, and then we operate at the line of scrimmage. Everything goes from there.\u201d
\nThe Bears\u2019 pre-snap operation has been an issue this summer. Williams needs to post good passing numbers \u2014 but also to try to ensure the Bears don\u2019t get flagged for illegal formations, false starts or delays of game. Johnson wouldn\u2019t say how long Williams will play, but it\u2019d be surprising if he made it to the second quarter.<\/p>\n
Playing a second-year undrafted lineman from the University of British Columbia at left tackle was not in the Bears\u2019 initial plans. Theo Benedet\u2019s emergence in the starting competition is a testament to how well he\u2019s played in camp \u2014 but says even more about how Braxton Jones and rookie Ozzy Trapilo have failed to grab the starting job.
\nExpect Jones to start Sunday, with Benedet also taking snaps at left tackle as the Bears hope to find an answer sooner rather than later. The most compelling part of the Bears\u2019 rotation will be Trapilo, though \u2014 he\u2019s played mostly second-string right tackle all week in practice. If he doesn\u2019t appear at left tackle in the game, it\u2019s a safe bet the Bears have decided he\u2019s most likely to start the season as a backup at both left and right tackle spots.
\nTrapilo\u2019s feet are faster on the right side, which is where he played at Boston College. The Bears want that to change.
\n\u201cThere are times where the feet have gotten a little bit slow at times, both in the run game and in pass [protection],\u201d Johnson said. \u201cThe mental [aspect] of just speeding up \u2014 \u2018Ball, snap, let\u2019s go ahead and get in a good physical position here to block the man in front of me\u2019 \u2014 it\u2019s been a little bit of up and down.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Bears are still searching for a third defensive end they can plug into the lineup on obvious passing downs when Dayo Odeyingbo moves inside to tackle. Austin Booker made his case in the Bears\u2019 preseason opener, totaling three sacks and a forced fumble.
\n\u201cI\u2019m excited to see what he does in the regular season,\u201d defensive line coach Jeremy Garrett said.
\nNot that he\u2019s locked down that role quite yet. Garrett said end Dominique Robinson has improved but needs to learn how to win with power instead of just finesse. Tanoh Kpassagnon is physical against the run and has experience playing for coordinator Dennis Allen.<\/p>\n
The Bears hope to have star cornerback Jaylon Johnson \u2014 and starting nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon \u2014 back by the start of the season. That leaves one open job in the starting lineup.
\nNahshon Wright and Tyrique Stevenson will both start Sunday but have been dueling throughout training camp. Third-year cornerback Terell Smith entered the competition this week, playing opposite Stevenson with the first team on Thursday.
\nWright played for defensive backs coach Al Harris with the Cowboys.
