Over 42 days and 11 states, the team intercepted 24 storms and collected more than 10,000 hailstones, the first large-scale study of its kind in over four decades.<\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">&#8220;We don\u2019t really know how hail forms,&#8221; said Gensini. &#8220;We&#8217;ll be looking at the pathway \u2013 the trajectory \u2013 that a hailstone takes as it moves through a thunderstorm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>The IceChip Research Project<\/h3>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">Gensini coordinated the effort like an &#8220;air traffic control quarterback,&#8221; directing teams to position radar equipment, weather balloons, and instrument pods along storm paths. Thirty vehicles, each staffed by two to three researchers, tracked storms to capture data safely.<\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">Northern Illinois University students Caitlin Roufa and Landon Moeller were part of the mobile Mesonet team that deployed sensors ahead of hail to collect samples ranging from small pellets to rare large specimens. Moeller described the experience as intense, with hail ranging from quarter-sized to apple-sized stones pounding their vehicle.<\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">The collected hail was shipped to the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado for detailed study. &#8220;So these hailstones that we found on the campaign that were larger than four inches in diameter, we&#8217;re gonna be really interested in those,&#8221; Gensini said. &#8220;They obviously have the propensity to impact people and property.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>The Impact of Hail<\/h2>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">Damage caused by hail accounts for 60 to 80% of losses from severe thunderstorms annually.
