Chicagoans attended Equal Hope’s 3rd Annual \u201cTeal Talk\u201d Health & Resource Fair recently at the Humboldt Park Field House, held in honor of National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month in January. Teal is the color representing cervical cancer.<\/p>\n
The organization partnered with the Humboldt Park Field House to bring healthcare education, resources, activities, and food to the community.<\/p>\n
A Chicago-based, 501(c)(3) organization, Equal Hope is dedicated to saving lives by eliminating inequities in the treatment of breast, cervical, and other cancers by connecting uninsured and underinsured patients to high-quality preventative care, screening, diagnostics, and treatment.<\/p>\n
Cervical cancer expert and Equal Hope Board of Directors member Dr. Nita Lee from the University of Chicago Medicine, was the guest speaker whose \u201cTeal Talk\u201d revealed the latest insights in prevention, detection, screening, and treatment.<\/p>\n
Chicago Ald. Jessie Fuentes (26th Ward) attended and delivered remarks. She thanked Dr. Lee for all that she and the university does in cervical cancer detection and treatment, and praised Equal Hope for its grassroots efforts to educate and provide assistance to women in marginalized communities.<\/p>\n
The Health & Resource Fair also included 25 vendors who offered a variety of information on healthcare services, job opportunities, recidivism, and housing. All of these impact a cervical cancer patient and their family members.<\/p>\n
Chicago’s cervical cancer incidence is 39 percent higher than the U.S. average, and its mortality is 60 percent higher than the U.S. average. (Source NCI Data 2011 \u2013 2015). Data also shows that cervical cancer is disproportionately higher in Black and Brown communities nationwide and in Chicago.<\/p>\n
<h3(Equal Hope’s) Outreach Efforts<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n
In 2024, Equal Hope’s outreach efforts reached more than 100,000 in the Chicagoland area. Support included information sharing, rides to health screenings, scheduling appointments, and establishing primary care for hundreds of women.<\/p>\n
