The $7 billion development planned near the United Center has cleared its first hurdle with unanimous approval from the Chicago Plan Commission. Named the 1901 Project for the arena’s address, the proposal promises to transform the West Side by replacing parking lots with a bustling mix of homes, businesses, and entertainment venues.<\/p>\n
The first phase includes a 6,000-seat theater-style music venue and a 233-room hotel, both set to be built by 2028 on the lot south of the United Center. Plans also feature a parking garage with an elevated park and playground just west of the arena.<\/p>\n
Alderman Walter Burnett, whose 27th Ward includes the site, praised the project’s potential. “This is a huge project to give people hope that there’s life in the city of Chicago; there’s life on the West Side, and it’s going to drive more development on the West Side,” Burnett said.<\/p>\n
Funded by the owners of the Bulls and Blackhawks, the project will include retail spaces, parks, and up to 5,000 residential units, 20% of which will be affordable housing.<\/p>\n
However, not everyone is satisfied with the timeline for affordable housing. “I’ll probably be retired by the time they get around to building those affordable units. That’s too late for me,” said Kimmie Jordan, a downtown hospitality worker, during Thursday’s hearing.<\/p>\n
The project sparked mixed reactions during community meetings over the summer. While some residents raised concerns about gentrification, others expressed optimism about the changes.<\/p>\n
“We’ve seen firsthand the incredible impact that can be made when a community comes together and commits to ensuring bright futures for all of its young people,” said Will Edmondson of the James R. Jordan Boys and Girls Club of Chicago.<\/p>\n
Alderman Gil Villegas of the 36th Ward called the project “transformational.” He added, “We’re talking about making sure that the community that has lived there for years are going to stay there. But, we’re also talking about near-side communities, as well. They’re going to benefit.”<\/p>\n
Developers estimate the project will create thousands of jobs. Next, the proposal heads to the Zoning Committee and then the full City Council, where a vote could happen next month. If approved, construction could begin this summer.<\/p>\n
