Chicago Has A New Michelin-Starred Restaurant

New Addition to Chicago’s Michelin-Starred List

The Michelin Awards were announced last night in New York, and there are a few shakeups on Chicago’s list. The newest addition: Cariño, the year-old Uptown restaurant from chef Norman Fenton, which earned its first Michelin star. Fenton worked at the Michelin-starred Schwa and was the executive chef at Brass Heart, which closed last June and was replaced by Cariño.

A Bold and Creative Tasting Menu

The Michelin Guide had high praise for the “boldness and creativity” of Cariño’s tasting menu, featuring dishes like a “stunning” huitlacoche ravioli with fried corn silk, queso truffle quesadilla, al pastor-style lamb tartare tostada, and “chips and salsa” in the form of salsa verde jelly and a tortilla crumble.

Other Changes on the List

Four Chicago restaurants lost a Michelin star this year, according to Crain’s. South Loop brewery restaurant Moody Tongue dropped from two stars to one, and three lost their single stars: sushi restaurant Omakase Yume, Spain and Portugal seafood restaurant Porto, and intimate New American establishment Temporis. The latter two restaurants have recently closed.

Stalwart Restaurants Retain Their Stars

Alinea in Lincoln Park and Smyth in Fulton Market retained their status as Chicago’s only restaurants with three Michelin stars, while West Loop restaurants Ever and Oriole are two-star establishments.

The 14 other Chicago restaurants with single stars this year are: Atelier, Boka, EL Ideas, Elske, Esmé, Galit, Indienne, Kasama, Mako, Moody Tongue, Next, Schwa, Sepia, and Topolobampo.

A Green Star for Sustainability

Daisies in Logan Square was granted a Michelin “Green Star” for a second year, an award that “highlights restaurants at the forefront of the industry when it comes to their sustainable practices.” “Sustainability isn’t just approached from an environmental standpoint — it is an integral pillar of the restaurant’s identity,” the Michelin Guide said of Daisies.

Conclusion

The Michelin Guide’s announcement brings new recognition to Cariño and highlights the creativity and innovation of Chicago’s culinary scene. With this new addition, Chicago now has a total of 17 Michelin-starred restaurants.
