Bears Blasted by 49ers in Brown’s Head-Coaching Debut, Drop to 4-9

Game Recap

The Chicago Bears got off to a slow start under new head coach Thomas Brown, and the San Francisco 49ers took advantage of it. The 49ers scored the first 24 points of the game and held the Bears scoreless in the first half.

Brock Purdy found JaJuan Jennings for a pair of TD passes, sandwiched around a 1-yard TD run by rookie running back Isaac Guerendo, to take a 21-0 lead. Jake Moody added a chip shot 23-yard field goal with less than two minutes to go in the second quarter, making the score 24-0.

For the seventh time this season, the Bears went three-and-out on their opening drive of the game and did next to nothing for the rest of the first half. By the time the second quarter ended, the 49ers had outgained the Bears 324-4 and racked up 14 first downs to the Bears’ one.

According to The Athletic’s Kevin Fishbain, the Bears’ 4 total yards was their fewest yards in a half going back to the year 2000.

Second-Half Spark

If there’s any consolation for what was mostly a poor showing by the Bears, quarterback Caleb Williams and wide receiver Rome Odunze found a rhythm in the second half. Williams hit Odunze with a pair of TD passes to get the Bears on the board. One was a four-yard connection with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter, and the other was a 14-yard TD pass with just under 12 minutes left in the ballgame.

Odunze finished his day with four catches for 42 yards and two TD catches.

49ers Dominate in Second Half

While the Williams-Odunze connection provided a brief spark, Guerendo and Patrick Taylor Jr quickly extinguished it. Each 49ers running back added a TD run apiece in the second half, bringing the game to its final score, 38-13.

Guerendo notched 15 carries for 78 yards and two TD runs by game’s end.
