Pumpkin Smash Event: Teens Organize and Participate
The fourth annual Pumpkin Smash event, organized by teens with the Gary Comer Youth Center and Future Farmers of America, was a massive hit at the Comer Corps Youth Farm in Grand Crossing on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024. Teens, their families, and staff came together to smash unsold pumpkins from various grocery stores in the area, with some destined for composting on the farm and others to be transported to a composting facility.
Agriculture and Community Fun
The Pumpkin Smash event featured various activities, including pizza making using ingredients from the farm, t-shirt making, a farmer’s market, and activities for kids. Participants had a blast smashing the pumpkins, some weighing as much as 100 pounds, using various techniques and tools, such as bats and hammers. The event was designed to promote sustainability, reduce food waste, and raise awareness about the importance of composting.
