CHICAGO — Two people died Tuesday after being shot by a “disgruntled ex-employee” of a Navy Pier subcontractor, Chief of Patrol Jon Hein said during an afternoon press conference.

The victims, both adult men, were shot shortly before 1:30 p.m. near a loading dock area on the north side of the pier at 600 East Grand Avenue that is not accessed by the public, Hein said. Navy Pier Response and Lockdown

Navy Pier Chief Operating Officer Brian Murphy said a lockdown alert was immediately sent to the pier’s 70 tenants through an internal communications system after the shooting. That shelter-in-place order has since been lifted.

“At no time did we feel that anyone from the public was in danger,” he said, adding that his thoughts were with the employees “who just came to work today.”

Both Hein and Murphy called the shooting “isolated.”

“The pier is clear now. The pier is safe,” Hein said.
