An Edgewater Elementary School’s Budding Band Program Needs Instruments. Here’s How To Help
Music Teacher’s Passion Project
At Stephen K. Hayt Elementary School, 1518 W. Granville Ave., music teacher Sarah Latimer is dedicated to nurturing a new concert band program. This is the second year of the program, and Latimer is determined to provide students with the necessary instruments, accessories, and cleaning equipment to foster their musical growth.
A Program Born Out of Passion
Latimer launched the GoFundMe with a goal of $5,000, and it has already raised nearly $1,800. She started the program to give students who are interested in music more time to explore their passion, beyond the one hour of music class allocated in the school’s general music curriculum. The concert band program is two days a week for an hour after school, and it’s growing rapidly.
A Growing Program
Last year, there were 17 students who stuck with the concert band until the end of the year, and this year, 33 kids signed up. Latimer is thrilled with the increase in popularity, citing the fact that kids are really enjoying it. She believes that the growth is a testament to the program’s success.
Bringing in New Talent
Some students who join Hayt’s concert band have even begun attending a weekend band program open to all Chicago Public Schools students, a testament to the program’s impact. Neighbors interested in donating instruments or accessories directly to Latimer can reach her at slatimer4@cps.edu.
