UChicago Medicine Receives $75 Million Donation for New Cancer Pavilion
AbbVie Foundation Contributes to State-of-the-Art Facility
University of Chicago Medicine has received a $75 million donation from the AbbVie Foundation to support the construction of a new cancer pavilion on its Hyde Park campus. The facility, set to open in 2027, will be named after the nonprofit and will serve as a hub for cancer prevention, screening, and diagnoses.
Transforming Cancer Care
The new center will streamline the process for patients receiving care, consolidating services currently spread across five buildings on the campus. It will feature a ground-floor space for community outreach, private infusion bays, and a dedicated breast center. The facility will also include 80 inpatient beds, including 64 medical-surgical beds and a 16-bed intensive care unit, as well as infusion therapy with private rooms grouped by cancer type, a cancer imaging suite, and dedicated clinical trial spaces.
Enhancing Patient Experience
The updated design of the center reflects patient needs, with features such as a community hub for cancer prevention, screening, and diagnoses, private infusion bays, and a dedicated breast center. The facility will also provide around 200,000 outpatient visits and 5,000 inpatient admissions annually, freeing up space at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
A Commitment to Health Equity
The AbbVie Foundation and UChicago Medicine have a long-standing partnership to advance health equity on the city’s South Side. The foundation has committed $8 million over five years to support the establishment of the Liaisons in Care program.
