It Takes A Village Leadership Academy Celebrates Opening of Bronzeville School with Social Justice Focus

The It Takes A Village Leadership Academy welcomed family, friends, and elected officials to its new Bronzeville campus Tuesday, marking the opening of its second location with a focus on social justice.

The school, founded in 2004, is dedicated to providing "high-quality, culturally responsive education and life-empowering social services" to students and their families. With a history of controversy and activism, the school’s latest move is a significant step forward in its mission to empower young people.

The campus, located at 4930 S. Cottage Grove Ave., is situated in the former Hales Franciscan High School building, which was once a Catholic institution that served as an alternative to traditional Chicago Catholic schools for African American students.

"We understand that it’s not just about what happens in the classroom and through instruction," said Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. "It is about what happens with every small conversation and word of encouragement. It’s about what happens with every passport stamp to another continent that broadens the perspective of these young global citizens."

The academy has a long history of community engagement and activism, with students involved in campaigns that address issues such as police brutality and gun violence. The school’s commitment to social justice has led to partnerships with local organizations and institutions, further expanding its reach and impact.

The It Takes A Village Leadership Academy’s social justice focus extends beyond the classroom, with initiatives like the World Scholars Program, which sends students on international service trips, and community campaigns, such as the successful effort to rename a West Side park after abolitionists Frederick and Anna Murray Douglass.

Students at the school are also involved in various leadership development programs, including a junior leadership council and a student-run radio station. The academy’s emphasis on community and social justice has earned it recognition and support from local leaders and organizations.

"The village really showed up today," said school co-founder Nakisha Hobbs, expressing her gratitude for the outpouring of support from community members, parents, and elected officials.

As the school continues to grow and expand, its focus on social justice will remain a core part of its mission. With its new Bronzeville campus, the It Takes A Village Leadership Academy is poised to make an even greater impact in the community and beyond.
