Introduction to the Case
A Chicago man is accused of shooting at his daughter and her girlfriend after confronting them about their sexual orientation.
The Incident
Jaime Santiago, 59, faces hate crime and attempted murder charges for the Aug. 24 attack in Humboldt Park. He was arrested over the weekend in Kissimmee, Florida. The 18-year-old daughter and her 19-year-old girlfriend were trying to drive out of the neighborhood when they realized two of their tires had been slashed, according to charging documents.
Confrontation and Shooting
The couple stopped in the 2600 block of West Crystal Street to call friends for help, when Santiago allegedly showed up and began confronting his daughter about her relationship, documents said. Santiago then pointed a revolver at the girlfriend, and shot his own daughter when she tried to intervene, court documents said. He continued to fire several shots at the girlfriend as she ran away, the documents said.
Aftermath
His daughter was struck once in the stomach and transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, according to Chicago police. Santiago fled the scene, police said. He was arrested a few hours later in downstate Illinois for speeding, fleeing police and possessing a gun, according to court records, but appears to have been released and continued down to Florida.
Arrest and Trial
A warrant was issued a few days later out of Cook County, according to court records. Santiago was taken into custody Friday and brought back to Illinois. A Cook County judge ordered him detained pending trial, finding he was a threat not just to his family but “any member of the LGBTQ community.” His next court date is scheduled for Friday.
Conclusion
The case highlights the ongoing issue of hate crimes against the LGBTQ community and the importance of addressing and preventing such incidents. It also underscores the need for support and protection for individuals who may be vulnerable to violence and discrimination based on their sexual orientation.
