Maison Pasquale Brings Charm Of European Markets To Roscoe Village

Must read

Introduction to Maison Pasquale

ROSCOE VILLAGE — A specialty food and wine shop inspired by the markets of France and Italy is open in Roscoe Village. Maison Pasquale, 2058 W. Roscoe St., was designed to recreate the charm of small European épiceries where shelves are lined with local products and neighbors gather over food and wine. The shop is the creation of Julia Casale, a longtime hospitality professional, and her partner and co-founder, Patrick Walsh.

The Concept and Inspiration

Maison Pasquale offers imported pantry staples like jams, honeys, olive oils and vinegars, alongside a deli counter with cheese, charcuterie, sandwiches, salads and tinned fish. Casale spent much of her career in luxury hotels, working in Boston, Florida and Chicago. Most recently, she oversaw food and beverage at the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago, managing restaurants, bars, events and banquets. As Casale’s career developed, she held onto the idea of opening a shop like the ones she loved visiting as a kid, she said. Her grandfather owned a wine shop in upstate New York, and her father would take her to specialty food stores on weekends.

European Influence

The vision for Maison Pasquale was shaped not only by Casale’s family history, but also by her travels through Europe. Specialty shops are everywhere, especially in Italy and France, where small producers pour their passion into what they do, Casale said. “In Provence, markets take over the whole town several days a week. It’s food, wine, textiles, everything,” she said. “People are committed to fresh, local products.” In Modena, food is the heartbeat of the city, Casale said. Parmesan, balsamic, prosciutto and tortellini are all locally produced and sourced, she said. “The pride producers take in their work is incredible,” Casale said. “That’s the spirit we want in our shop.”

Products and Ambiance

Walsh grew up in Provence, and the pair wanted a name that honored their backgrounds. “Maison” means home in French, while “Pasquale” is for Casale’s grandfather. Last summer, the two spent three months traveling across Europe, meeting small producers and sourcing items to bring back to Chicago. Many of the products they carry have never been imported to the city, Casale said. “It’s really about highlighting small producers we believe in and creating a place where people can discover new things,” she said.

Location and Community

Maison Pasquale is split between retail shelves and a small deli with five or six tables. Along with European staples and housewares like lavender bundles from Provence, the shop stocks wines, spirits, beer and non-alcoholic beverages. Casale
