Introduction to South Loop Restaurants

SOUTH LOOP — It’s been a busy summer for South Loop restaurants. From a former Chicago Bear adding another eatery to his portfolio to a beloved sushi spot expanding to the Wells Street corridor, here’s a look at some recent restaurant developments in the area:

Buttercup

As previously reported, former Chicago Bear defensive end Israel Idonije is bringing a taste of Northern Italy to the South Loop with Buttercup, 75 E. 16th St., a day cafe/amaro bar set to open Sunday.
This time, Idonije is teaming up with Chef Alex Carnovale, who is currently sharing his French Laundry-trained talents at nearby Oliver’s. Expect offerings like pork collar and truffle pizzetta paired with a selection of amaro-infused cocktails from Beverage Director Luke DeYoung.
Buttercup joins several other South Loop restaurants owned by Idonije, including the recently revamped Signature Steak and sports bar The Staley.
Buttercup is taking over the space formerly occupied by 16th Street Cafe & Bar, a low-key watering hole that closed earlier this year.

Sushi Plus Rotary Bar

The popular sushi restaurant known for its conveyor belt roll delivery is opening another location at 601 S. Wells St. on the ground floor of Vetro Condominiums. The South Loop location will be the fourth Sushi Plus Rotary Bar in the Chicago area, joining ones in Chinatown, Northalsted and west suburban Aurora.
The restaurant’s reasonably priced fare includes ramen, sashimi and poke bowls, along with a variety of maki rolls — from Godzilla Maki to Snow White Maki. Fans of deep-fried dishes can enjoy offerings like Shrimp Tempura Mix and Yaki Ebi.

Stan’s Donuts

After eight years of serving hungry commuters near the Roosevelt CTA station, the local Stan’s Donuts chain is shutting down its South Loop location Oct. 1, an employee confirmed Tuesday.
Stan’s is known for inventive confections like Biscoff Pockets and Lemon Pistachio donuts.
The reason for the closure is unclear, and attempts to reach Stan’s management were unsuccessful. Founded in Los Angeles, the popular doughnut chain operates 30 stores across the city and suburbs, with several located inside Mariano’s supermarkets.
But don’t fret, Sloopers: You can still get your sugar fix from Taiwanese cafe Sweet Bean or Trez Pugh’s Sip & Savor, both within walking distance.

Conclusion

The South Loop has seen significant developments in its restaurant scene, with new openings like Buttercup and Sushi Plus Rotary Bar, and closures like Stan’s Donuts. These changes reflect the dynamic nature of the area’s culinary landscape, offering residents and visitors a range of dining options to explore.
