Another “Air Quality Alert” has been issued by the Illinois EPA for an increase in ozone and particulates. Here is the latest statement.

⚠️ AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT CDT THURSDAY NIGHT ⚠️

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has determined that the Air Pollution Action Day designation will remain in effect for the greater Chicago Metropolitan Area through Thursday night August 7th.

A Chicago area Air Pollution Action Day is declared when weather conditions are such that widespread ozone and or particulate levels are expected to be at or above the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category of the Air Quality Index for multiple days.

Active children and adults, especially people with pulmonary or respiratory disease such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor activity.

Area residents are urged to reduce pollution levels. Air quality forecasts, current air quality, and tips on how you can reduce your emissions can be found at www.airnow.gov.

Forecast Computer Model Simulation

Clouds will build and lead to isolated afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms across the metro area Thursday afternoon and evening. Rainfall coverage will be about 30% of the metro area.

Severe Thunderstorm Outlook

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for the potential of seeing a strong or severe thunderstorm.

It’s a low end chance but should any part of the area see a severe thunderstorm the biggest threat would be borderline gusty winds of 50-60 mph due to daytime heating and modest instability.

Thursday High Temperatures

Chicago’s first 90-degree or warmer day for the month of August is predicted and the first since July 29th.

Thursday Beach Forecast

Outside of an isolated shower or storm PM, temperatures and waves will be agreeable for areas swimmers. Lake Michigan shoreline water temperature equaled the 2025 high so far, reaching 76-degrees.

Thursday Sunburn Forecast

The recent stratospheric haze due to wildfire smoke has shrouded area skies in recent days, resulting in much higher sunburn times.
