HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – It’s not often Wheaton native Jeff Jendryk plays professionally close to home, so his friends and family are showing up in mass to watch the 29-year-old compete this week at NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates.

“I was looking at the tickets today. I think I have 30-40 people coming this week, so I’m pretty stoked about it,” noted Jendryk who plays middle blocker for Team USA. “I know our guys are pretty excited about it, too.”

Jendryk, a 2015 national champion at Loyola and a 2024 Olympic bronze medalist, will serve as one of the leaders for Team USA in the Volleyball Nations League – an annual summer tournament showcasing some of the best players around the globe for five nights of high level competition.

“The environment is going to be crazy. We’ve got some really great teams here. We’ve got Poland – they got the silver medal in the Olympics. We beat Italy to get that bronze medal. There’s going to be a lot of fight in this week.”

“For sure. I think a goal of ours on our team is just to spread the game of volleyball and show what we can do,” explained Team USA captain Erik Shoji. “A lot of people might see volleyball on TV, but in person it’s a whole different ball game – the pace, the speed, the height, the power. Volleyball is really big in this state and in this city, so we’re hoping people come out and see us live.”

The U.S. will also have a legend on the sideline, as Karch Kiraly, considered one the greatest players of all-time, joined the men’s national team in October as head coach after 12 years and three Olympic medals coaching the U.S. women.

“Loving it. It’s a different game with more power. It’s still volleyball in terms of the skills of the game, but the guys play so high off the floor and play with such incredible power. It’s back to my roots.”

The Volleyball Nationals League also gives Kiraly an early look at the Team USA talent pool for the L.A. Olympics in 2028.

“This is really the start of a new Olympic cycle. I mean, it started earlier, but to put a uniform on against other elite teams – some of the best teams on the planet – that’s the start of the road to L.A. 2028.”
