ANDERSONVILLE — The couple behind Great Lake Pizza has opened a new venture in Andersonville more than a decade after their first pizza shop closed.
Great Lake, 1476 W. Berwyn Ave., opened quietly last week with no announcement on social media or even a website — nothing beyond a small “open” sign in the front window. It’s about two blocks away from Great Lake Pizza’s former home on Balmoral Avenue.
Owners Lydia Esparza and Nick Lessins told Block Club on a recent afternoon that the store is still in the works, like a soft opening.
Along with pizza, Great Lake is also selling grocery items from brands neighbors can’t get from anywhere else, like cookies, ice cream, chips, sauces, teas and more, Esparza said.
The lack of fanfare for Great Lake’s opening is in stark contrast to the buzz around Great Lake Pizza when it closed in 2013.
It was known for drawing long lines out the door after receiving national acclaim — GQ calling it the best pizza in the country — and serving stars like Jay-Z and Beyoncé.
Since its closure, Great Lake Pizza popped up once in Chicago for a one-day event at Cellar Door Provisions in 2019.
Esparza and Lessins told the Chicago Tribune they signed a 10-year lease in this new storefront.
“We want to be here a very long time, 20 years this time, when we’re in our 80s,” Esparza told the Tribune.
