Scorching Heat and Humidity in Chicagoland

Must read

Current Conditions and Looking Ahead

The June heat wave rolls on for Chicagoland, with more scorching heat and humidity Monday to start the work week. But there is relief coming soon.

High temperatures Monday will again reach the mid- to upper 90s, with the Chicago record of 97 degrees for June 23 certainly within reach.

And it’ll feel even hotter when factoring in the high dew points, with heat index values Monday soaring between 100 to 110. And with gusty winds from the southwest blowing in hot air, there won’t be any lakeside cooling effect Monday, unless you’re actually in Lake Michigan.

An Extreme Heat Warning continues for Cook County until midnight Tuesday morning, and until 7 p.m. Monday for Kenosha County in Southeastern Wisconsin.

For the rest of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until midnight Tuesday morning. This means peak afternoon heat index values between 100 and 105.

There is a line of storms that will move toward the area later, but they’re expected to largely dissipate by the time they reach Chicagoland on Monday night. There’s still the possibility of a pop-up storm and severe conditions, but the risk is marginal Monday for most of Chicagoland.

A more likely chance for showers and storms arrives Tuesday afternoon, and along with that will come a cooldown. While it’ll still be warm and humid compared to seasonal averages, Tuesday’s highs are projected to stay below 90 for the first time since Friday.

Staying Safe, Cooling Centers Open

With the high heat and humidity will again come intense sunshine throughout Monday around Chicagoland. This means the risk of sunburn is very high if you’re outside too long without adequate protection.

At 1 p.m., sunburn will occur in just over 15 minutes.

This may surprise some, but when examining all weather-related fatalities, heat is No. 1, and second place is not even close.

How does heat become deadly?

Heat waves kill by overwhelming the body’s ability to regulate its internal temperature, leading to heatstroke, organ damage and cardiovascular failure. Extreme heat can also exacerbate existing health conditions like heart and lung problems, and dehydration can cause organ shut down.

If you need a place to stay safe and cool, these six community centers will be open in Chicago to serve as cooling shelters:

  • Garfield Center – 10 South Kedzie Avenue, will be open Saturday and Sunday.

Open Monday and Tuesday:

  • Englewood Center – 1140 West 79th Street.
  • King Center – 4314 South Cottage Grove.
  • North Area Center – 845 West Wilson Avenue.
  • South Chicago Center – 8650 South Commercial Avenue.
  • Trina Davila Center – 4312 West North Avenue.

Other cooling options include Chicago Police Department district stations (available 24/7), Chicago libraries, senior centers, park district facilities, city colleges and all 50 Chicago outdoor pools.

For forecast, emergency alerts, safety tips and cooling centers, stay up-to-date with the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) app or their social media pages.

Current Conditions

Looking Ahead

Again, Tuesday will still be warm and muggy, but with highs in the upper 80s, it won’t be as scorching as it’s been since Friday.

And the type of heat we’ve had the last three days is not typical for this early in the summer.

The extended outlook calls for an even cooler Wednesday, with temps closer to 80s and isolated showers and storms.

The rest of the week will have temps in the mid- to upper 80s, with a chance of showers and storms each afternoon or evening through the coming weekend.
