Restaurant and Bar Happenings in the South Loop
The South Loop is experiencing a surge in new restaurant and bar openings, with four establishments set to launch in the coming months. Meanwhile, a beloved bakery has closed its doors after seven years in operation.
Bruleé
Bruleé, from chef Emani Nicole Roberts, is set to open in July at 2036 S. Michigan Ave. The restaurant will give diners “a refined breakfast experience” with fresh pastries made daily and a kitchen led by chef Kennedy B of Midori Table, according to Roberts’ Instagram post.
The restaurant is looking for staff to fill front and back of house positions; those interested can send resumes to jobs@bruleechicago.com.
Adda Indian Cuisine
Popular Near West Side eatery Adda Indian Cuisine announced in late April it’s joining the rotating cast of restaurants at the South Loop Food Company, a cloud kitchen operating out of 2537 S. Wabash Ave. since fall 2020. An opening date has yet to be set.
Buttercup Amaro Lounge
16th Street Bar, the quaint South Loop watering hole at 75 E. 16th St. once known as Bureau Bar, quietly closed earlier this year.
Soon it will be reborn as the Buttercup Amaro Lounge — another business from former Chicago Bear defensive end Israel Idonije — described as a place “where the charm of a hidden speakeasy meets the rustic, timeless flavors of Italy.”
The lounge is part of Idonije’s plan to turn the South Loop into a must-see destination. Idonije’s portfolio includes Signature and The Staley. He and his team also plan to open a boutique hotel on Motor Row.
Batter & Berries
For those who have been anticipating Batter & Berries’ expansion to the South Loop, the wait is over. The restaurant announced via social media Tuesday it’s now taking carryout orders from its new location at the Southbridge Apartments, 2318 S. State St.
Teapotbrew Bakery
Teapotbrew Bakery, 1802 S. Wabash Ave., served its last apple fritter muffin Sunday after seven years in operation. Chef and owner Veranda Runsewe posted a heartfelt message on Instagram thanking customers for their support.
“When I opened these doors, I had no idea what would follow — how many of you would become family, how many moments we’d share, or how deeply this little corner café would touch my heart. This journey has been a beautiful, unpredictable ride … and one I’ll never forget,” wrote Runsewe. “It isn’t goodbye, but see you soon.”
The cafe opened another outpost inside Navy Pier in 2022.
Conclusion
The South Loop is experiencing a period of significant growth and change, with new restaurants and bars opening and old favorites closing. While the loss of Teapotbrew Bakery will be felt by the community, the arrival of new establishments like Bruleé, Adda Indian Cuisine, Buttercup Amaro Lounge, and Batter & Berries is sure to bring new energy and excitement to the area.
