UNCF Chicago Raises More Than $100K at 41st Annual Walk For Education
A Family-Friendly Event with a Purpose
More than 1200 supporters attended the 41st Annual Walk for Education, held along Chicago’s lakefront at South DuSable Lake Shore Drive at 39th Street in Burnham Park. The event raised more than $100,000, and the donation link to the Chicago Walk will remain open through September 30. Visit www.uncf.org/chicagowalk, click register, then click donate to contribute.
A Perfect Day for a Walk
The beautiful lakefront, cool temperature, mellow winds, and blue sky created a perfect setting for the annual event. Participants had the option to choose between a 5K walk/fun run or a 10K bike/skate course.
A Goal to Support Historically Black Colleges and Universities
“We are grateful for the level of participation at the Walk this year,” said Lisa M. Rollins, UNCF Regional Development Director. “However, demand for scholarships has never been greater. We still need support, and there is still time to donate to the Chicago Walk.” The event has been a cornerstone of UNCF’s mission to raise money for scholarships for Black, Brown, and other deserving students to get to and through college and support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Honorary Chair and Emcees
Toni Preckwinkle, President of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, returned this year as Honorary Chair of the Walk for Education, bringing along the County Board Walk team. Radio personality Ramonski Luv from FM Omni-Channel Radio and local media personality Frankie Robinson served as emcees, motivating everyone and keeping the energy level high.
A Special Grand Marshal
Advocate, scholar, and future veterinarian Amara Harris served as the first-ever Walk Grand Marshal, leading the Walk. In opening remarks, Preckwinkle spoke of the impact of HBCUs on getting kids into colleges and ensuring they graduate.
Supporting Students Nationwide
Today, UNCF supports more than 60,000 students at over 1,100 colleges and universities nationwide, including 37 UNCF HBCU member schools.
Post-Walk Celebration
At the Walk, the Black Onyx dance team cheered on participants at the start and finish lines. Afterward, Tacos Delicioso provided free tacos, and Buddy’s Cart & Catering provided free hot dogs.
