Family of Sonya Massey to receive $10M settlement following fatal shooting
The Backstory
Sonya Massey, a 50-year-old woman, was shot and killed in her home by former sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson last summer. At the time, she was experiencing a mental health crisis and had called 911. Body camera footage shows that Grayson shot Massey in the head after she moved a pot of boiling water from her stove.
The Settlement
A $10 million settlement has been reached between Sangamon County and the family of Sonya Massey, according to NPR Illinois. The settlement does not impact the criminal case against Grayson, who has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and remains jailed without bond.
What’s Next
The Sangamon County Board will officially approve the settlement at its meeting on Tuesday.
