Current Weather Conditions in Chicagoland

The good weather news for Sunday in Chicagoland is that we’ll see plenty of sunshine and low humidity again, with inland highs in the low 80s and lakeside highs in the mid- to upper 70s.

But there is some bad news.

We’re in for another day of smoke from the Canadian wildfires, which will make for hazy sunshine. An Air Quality Alert is in effect for most of Chicagoland until midnight Sunday night.

In accordance, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has determined that the “Air Pollution Action Day” designation will remain in effect for the greater Chicago metropolitan area through Sunday night.

A Chicago-area “Air Pollution Action Day” is declared when weather conditions are such that widespread ozone and or particular levels are expected to be at or above the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category of the Air Quality Index for multiple days.

Active children and adults, especially people with pulmonary or respiratory disease such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor activity.

Area residents are urged to reduce pollution levels. Air quality forecasts, current air quality, and tips on how you can reduce your emissions can be found at www.airnow.gov.

Meanwhile, after this stretch of pleasant, cool and dry summer air, the heat and humidity will return to Chicagoland during the upcoming work week (see more below).

For those inclined to remain outdoors despite the smoky conditions, Sunday will be a nice beach day along Lake Michigan.

North/northeast/east winds will only reach about 10 miles per hour, and the water temperature along the Chicago shoreline is at a nice and swimmable 74 degrees.
