Charges Filed After Lake View Armed Robbery

Introduction to the Incident

A 19-year-old man is accused of several felonies including attempted murder and armed robbery after an attack early Sunday of two 24-year-old women in Lake View. Michael Jenkins, 19, was in court Wednesday facing attempted murder, armed robbery, possessing or selling a stolen vehicle, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and identity theft charges, police said.

Details of the Charges

The charges also reflect a separate armed robbery of a 21-year-old woman on June 19 in the 700 block of West Roscoe Street and the theft of two vehicles on June 9 and July 12, Chicago police said. Jenkins was identified as one of the people who allegedly shot and seriously injured a 24-year-old woman before robbing her and her 24-year-old friend in the 400 block of West Wellington Avenue, police said.

The Attack on the Women

The two women had been walking to one of their homes around 12:25 a.m. when three gunmen leaped from a silver SUV, according to a police report obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times. When they demanded the women’s belongings, the woman who was shot started to fight back, but her friend stopped her, saying “let them have” their things, the report said. The woman who resisted began shouting and trying to run away when one of the robbers punched and shot her, the report said.

Eyewitness Account

A good Samaritan who called 911 heard the gunshot and saw the attack from his window. “They were holding the two women against that fence. They were still screaming. One of the guys started hitting one of the women, and I immediately ran to get my phone and called 911,” Quinn Naughton told the Sun-Times.

Conclusion

The incident highlights the ongoing issue of violent crime in the area and the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement. The charges against Michael Jenkins reflect the seriousness of the crimes committed and the need for justice for the victims.
