WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Congress is one step closer to rolling back clean energy incentives. Senate Republicans Tuesday passed their tax bill, which gets rid of some wind and solar subsidies among other tax credits.
“Elon’s very upset that the EV mandate is going to be terminated,” President Donald Trump said.
The rift between President Trump and Elon Musk over Republicans’ “Big Beautiful Bill,” continued Tuesday as the president defended the bill’s repeal of electric vehicle tax credits.
“Not everybody wants an electric car. I don’t want an electric car,” President Trump said.
The EV credit is one of many energy incentives phased out in the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” Senate Republicans narrowly passed Tuesday after Vice President JD Vance cast a tie-breaking vote.
Oregon Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden slammed the bill.
“It is a death sentence for the wind and solar industries and hundreds of thousands of American jobs,” Sen. Wyden said.
During 27 hours of debate, Democrats tried to keep in place some of those tax credits.
Nevada Sen. Jacky Rosen introduced an amendment she says would save clean energy jobs in her state.
“For our nation to be truly energy independent and to compete with China, we must be a global leader on the energy sources of the future like solar and wind,” Sen. Rosen said.
Republicans say the bill supports energy dominance by promoting oil and gas development and repealing incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act.
“Americans have been paying for these subsidies for decades, and it’s time these industries compete on a level playing field,” Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) said.
Utah Sen. Mike Lee says getting rid of those subsidies and supporting more reliable energy sources will save Americans money.
“We can and do reduce energy prices by increasing development of our vast energy natural resources,” Lee said.
The bill now heads back to the House for a vote. Leaders say they want to have it passed by Friday.
